Idaho
Updated on: December 12, 2022

Information on those detained in Idaho jails and correctional facilities is kept in inmate records. According to the Idaho Public Records Act, the Idaho Public Records Law Manual, and other applicable laws, these records are available to the public.

The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) administers the offenders in prisons, jails, community reentry centers, and out-of-state institutions across the state. It runs nine state prisons with a population of around 8000 inmates.

Additionally, it keeps an eye on one private prison and five community reentry centers. The state has over 35,000 inmates on probation and another 5,100 on parole.

Idaho also runs a county prison system composed of 36 county jails in 44 counties. This prison system incarcerates around 5,200 inmates.

The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections runs three juvenile correctional facilities in Nampa, St. Anthony, and Lewiston. These facilities have around 200 minors charged with various offenses.

How to Locate State Prison Inmates

Interested parties can look for inmates in Idaho prisons using the IDOC's Resident/Client search service. The inmate lookup tool allows interested parties to conduct a free inmate search by inmate name or IDOC-issued number.

If you cannot find inmates in the state prisons, you can contact the IDOC by phone or email or visit your jail of interest to find them.

How to locate inmates in the County Jails in Idaho

Most county sheriff's offices offer instructions and information on determining whether someone is imprisoned. This data varies by jurisdiction and is often accessible via the sheriff's homepage for that county or the online jail roster.

The jail roster allows interested parties to locate a person in custody by entering the inmate's name. You may search by filling in the first and last names. On the other hand, some county jails have an inmate roster with a list of the inmates in their care. The list is arranged by inmates' names alphabetically by default, but you can customize the roster to your preferences to rearrange the list by;

  • Dates of incarceration
  • Dates of arrests
  • New inmates to older inmates.

Suppose the county jail does not maintain an online inmate roster. In that case, you can contact the county sheriff or jail administration of the county of interest and request to see the inmate roster they keep manually. Besides, sometimes inmates may be in jail but not on the inmate roster. This is because the list only comprises inmates who have completed their booking process for new arrestees or the orientation process for incoming inmates.

How to Locate Inmates using Third-party Websites

You can also locate inmates using privately owned websites that provide public access to Idaho's public records. These websites only require you to give your inmate's name, and they will run the search on all the databases available to yield results.

How to locate Juvenile Offenders in Idaho

Juvenile records are not public records. In return, this makes finding juvenile offenders incarcerated in Idaho very challenging. Interested individuals cannot access the juvenile court, criminal, arrest, or disciplinary records. However, they could go to court or a judge and request to view the records.

To gain access to these records, they need to provide probable cause that may convince the judge to subpoena the documents or give the interested individual a court order permitting them to gain access to them.

Only direct family members can access these records without a court order.
