Louisiana Inmate Search

Louisiana
Updated on: December 12, 2022

Louisiana inmate records are files containing information regarding offenders and detainees in county jails, state prisons, penal institutions, and other correctional facilities within Louisiana. They typically include personal and administrative details about incarcerated offenders. Personal information refers to identifying details such as the inmate's full name, age, gender, date of birth, race, nationality, ethnicity, and physical description, including height, weight, eye color, hair color, tattoos, scars, and other defining marks. On the other hand, administrative data comprise official information such as the offender's registration number, criminal history, current charges, arresting agency, booking date and time, sentence information, bail or bond amount, court dates, mugshots, fingerprint, and projected release date.

According to Louisiana's public record laws, most inmate records are open to the general public. This means that the citizens and interested parties can access or obtain these records from record custodians upon request. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections is the primary custodian of all offender records and related information at the state level. On the other hand, local sheriff's offices or police departments maintain and disseminate inmate records at the county or municipal levels.

Locating an incarcerated loved one is simple if you know where to start your search. Here are some platforms you can use to conduct an inmate search in Louisiana:

Louisiana State Prisoner Search

As discussed above, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections is responsible for the custody of all state-run correctional facilities alongside state prisoners. Therefore, to search for an inmate in these facilities, visit the DOC's official website. This Department allows you to conduct an inmate search using the "Locate a Person in Prison" search tool. The latter typically direct you to the "Louisiana Automated Victim Notification System (LAVNS)."

This database is updated every 24 hours and provides a simple search criterion where you can search using the offender's name, location, and ID or case number. Apart from incarcerated people in prisons, this site also allows you to obtain information on persons under probation or parole and community supervision.

Alternatively, interested parties can call 225-383-4580 to be connected and talk to the Imprisoned Person Locator. Remember, if you use this option, the staff will require to give the following inmate information:

  • Full Name
  • DPS&C number
  • Address of the facility where the inmate is located
  • Date of birth to access housing assignment
  • A contact phone number
  • A projected release date (if applicable)

Louisiana Jail Inmate Search

Local sheriff's offices are responsible for operating and maintaining county jails in Louisiana. County jails typically house offenders awaiting trial, bond, or serving short sentences, usually less than a year. Suppose you are arrested in Louisiana; you are most likely to spend the night or two in a county jail before going to court.

Most county jails in Louisiana provide online platforms where you can conduct an inmate search. Many facilities have an online inmate roster, usually containing a list of offenders currently at the jail, in alphabetical order, for instance, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

Other facilities, like Jefferson Sheriff's Office, provide an online inmate search tool that allows you to search using the inmate's full name and ID.

Contact the jail or sheriff's office to inquire if you cannot find an inmate using these tools. The jail staff will require you to give the offender's name and ID.

Federal Prisoner Search

There are four stand-alone federal prisons with two adjacent camps in Louisiana. Overseen by the South Central Regional Office, these facilities cumulatively house 4291 incarcerated offenders. To locate a federal offender, visit BOP's official site and click "Find an Inmate."
