Typically, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is responsible for operating all correctional facilities in Maryland. This agency is divided into two primary divisions; the Division of Correction and the Division of Pretrial Detention and Services.

Maryland State Prisoner Search

As discussed above, DPSCS is responsible for the safety and custody of all incarcerated offenders in state-run correctional facilities. This Department allows you to perform an inmate search using the "Inmate Locator" search tool on the website. This tool enables public members to know the housing location of offenders committed to the Commissioner of Correction's custody and currently housed at a state prison, Patuxent Institution, and for some offenders at Division of Pretrial and Detention Services facilities.

Remember, this locator does not list some short-sentenced inmates, although committed to the Commissioner of Correction, held at Division of Pretrial and Detention Services facilities. Additionally, offenders who are no longer in custody for any reason, such as escape or release, are not included in the inmate locator.

Maryland County Jail Inmate Search

County sheriff's offices typically maintain and operate county jails in Maryland. Usually, county jails house offenders or detainees awaiting trial, bond, or serving short sentences of less than a year. Anytime an individual is arrested within Maryland, they are taken to a county jail before going to court.

Therefore, if you believe your loved one or someone you know is serving time in a county jail or was recently arrested, visiting your local sheriff's office's website is the first thing to do. Most county jails have online databases where law enforcement store inmate information. Most of them provide an online inmate roster containing a list of all inmates currently at the designated facility. Some jails also allow you to search for an offender using an inmate search tool.

Federal Prisoners

Maryland has one federal prison with an adjacent federal prison camp. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Office oversees these federal facilities.
