Minnesota
Updated on: December 12, 2022

Minnesota features ten state prisons and 82 county jails alongside three federal prisons. The average daily population in county jails is 2168, while that for prisons is 5033 incarcerated offenders. The Minnesota Department of Corrections oversees all correctional facilities in this state. This agency has a budget of approximately $600 million, which funds all state prisons along with parole and probation services. It is important to note that Minnesota inmate populations have been steadily declining in recent years.

Minnesota inmate records are official data on offenders housed in correctional facilities in Minnesota. Typically, these records contain personal and administrative inmate details. Personal information comprises identifying information such as the inmate's full name, date of birth, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, and physical description, including height, weight, hair and eye color, tattoos, scars, and other marks. These records also contain official data, such as the offender's registration number, booking date and time, arresting agency, current charges, criminal history, court dates, mugshots, fingerprint, sentence information, facility location, bail or bond amount, and projected release date.

Under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, inmate records are publicly available. This means the general public and interested parties can inspect or obtain these records from record custodians upon request. The Minnesota Department of Corrections primarily maintains inmate records at the state level. Alternatively, you can get these files from your local sheriff's office or police department.

You can easily and quickly locate an incarcerated loved one within the Minnesota corrections system if you know where to begin the search. Here are platforms to use when looking for an offender in Minnesota:

Minnesota State Offender Lookup

The Minnesota Department of Corrections is responsible for the security and custody of all inmates incarcerated in state-run correctional facilities within Minnesota. This Department allows you to perform an inmate search using its "Search for Individuals and Fugitives" search tool. This Offender Search tool typically contains public information regarding persons committed to the Commissioner of Corrections and those still under the Department's jurisdiction (including those in prison or released but still under supervision).

It is important to note that it can take several business days for newly sentenced inmates to display on this MNDOC offenders locator. To begin your search, select one of the following methods:

  • Name: Enter First Name, Last Name or both
  • MNDOC Offender ID: Enter ID number

Other offender searches include Predatory Offender Search and List of Active DOC Fugitives.

Minnesota County Jail Inmate Search

County sheriff's offices are in charge of operating and managing county jails in Minnesota. Typically, county jails house detainees and offenders awaiting trial, bond, or serving short sentences, usually a year or less. These facilities also hold offenders convicted for less severe offenses or low-level crimes such as misdemeanor offenses. Finding a loved one in jail starts with knowing where they are located.

Most county jails have an online inmate roster containing a list of offenders currently at the facility, arranged in alphabetical order. You can click the name of your loved one to view more information regarding their custody status. Other jails allow you to search for a loved one using an online search tool similar to the MNDOC's tool.

If you still cannot find an inmate using the above options, consider calling the jail or sheriff's office to inquire about them.

Minnesota Federal Prisoners

There are three stand-alone federal prisons alongside one federal prison camp under the North Central Regional Office's oversight. These facilities house about 2462 incarcerated offenders. You can locate an incarcerated offender using the "Find an Inmate" search tool on the BOP website.
