There are 44 prisons under the management of the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. This department maintains the state's prison and parole systems. It is also responsible for maintaining and updating inmate information for individuals in state prisons and under community supervision.
These records are made public by the New York Freedom of Information Law, and you can find any inmate records across the state using various databases and agencies.
To locate an inmate in their care, you must visit the NYDCCS incarcerated lookup database. This database is searchable by the offender's name or NYDCCS-issued ID.
You may visit the advanced search option to find the inmate by their name and other personal and physical descriptions when using the name option. On this page, you can add information like their age, height, eye and hair color, gender, race, visible scars, and tattoos.
When utilizing the NYDCCS number option, you must input the correct ID to prevent yielding the wrong data of another inmate. The NYDCCS only belongs to one inmate throughout the NYCDCCS database.
There are 62 county jails across 62 counties in New York. These jails are managed locally by their local county sheriff's departments and are used to incarcerate pretrial inmates as they wait for their trial in court. These facilities also incarcerate individuals sentenced by courts to serve time in jail for less than a year.
You can easily locate such inmates by finding the inmate roster of your county jail of choice from the county sheriff's department or jail website. Most of these county jails in New York maintain an inmate list instead of a searchable inmate information database. Nonetheless, you can view this list by offender's names alphabetically, by gender, by date of incarceration, or by arrest.
If you cannot find an inmate in New York County Jails, you can call your local county sheriff's department and request the office to run the search on your behalf. The sheriff's website has contact information. You can also visit the office in person.
Using the Bureau of Prisons' inmate locator tool, you can easily find federal inmates in any of the state's four federal prisons or camps. This tool is searchable by the offender's full name or registration number. There is an option to indicate the number option, whether INS, BOP, FBI, or DCDC.
If you cannot find them, you can contact the Northeast Regional Office to inquire about the whereabouts of your loved one.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency contracts with and owns almost 83 facilities across the state. To find an inmate in any of them, you need to visit the ICE detainee locator system and try finding them by their names, detainee numbers, or country of birth.
If you cannot find them using the system, you can contact your nearest ICE field agent and request that they find your loved one.
Finally, you can find inmates using third-party websites. These are privately run with no affiliations with any government entity. Most of them require users to provide the names of their inmates of interest and a brief description of them. The search engine searches through the New York public records databases and delivers results for inmates that fit your description.
