The Texas Prison System is the biggest in the US, with 92 state facilities operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville. These facilities include state prisons, pre-release facilities, and psychiatric detention facilities, with 140,000 inmates within their walls.

The department also administers and supervises the TX Community Supervision Corrections. It is in charge of 370,000 probationers and 110,000 parolees.

There are also 17 federal facilities across the state operated by the South-Central Regional Office of the Bureau of Prisons. These facilities have a population of around 15,000 inmates.

Texas has 252 county jails in 254 counties, with a population of over 70,000 inmates. These jails are operated locally by the local county sheriff's departments. In addition, the state has 26 detention facilities, six prisons, and two county jails managed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to house inmates who violate immigration laws.

How can you find an inmate in the largest prison system in the US?

In County Jails

If you have no idea where to begin when you wish to find an inmate in Texas, you may start your search locally in the county jails. Here you can find your county jail inmate roster from the county sheriff's department. The roster is searchable by offender names or dates of incarceration or arrests.

At times, inmates are in the jails but not on the inmate roster, as they cannot be included on the roster until their booking process is complete. In that case, you can contact the jail administration or the corrections unit of the sheriff's department.

In State Prisons

If you cannot find the inmate on the roster, it may suggest that they were transferred to the state or federal prisons in the state. You may utilize the TDCJ inmate information search page to see if they are in state prisons. You can search inmates by their names or TDCJ-issued IDs. In addition, you can find inmates by their physical description, such as their height, race, age, hair, and eye color, or tattoos and scars.

In Federal Prisons

If you cannot locate them using the TDCJ offender search database, you need to check the BOP inmate locator database to find out if they are incarcerated in federal prisons. You can locate them by their names or the BOP register, DCDCD, FBI, or INS numbers if you have them.

Other ways to find an inmate in TX

If you are still unable to find them using the above methods, you can utilize the ICE detainee locator system if your inmate is an immigrant. You can find them by their official names, country of birth, or detainee numbers. You can also contact your local ICE field agent to help you locate your inmate.

Finally, you can utilize third-party websites that access TX public records. Furthermore, inmate records are general information under the TX Public Information Act. The website is simple and easy to use; you can search by county, state, or facility name. To find the inmate, you need to indicate their names. After hitting "search," a list of inmates with that name will appear with the location of their incarceration.

TX Sex Offender Search

You can locate a sex offender in TX using the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) sex offender search website, as it is responsible for maintaining a statewide sex offender registration database. You can also request access to the database from the county sheriff's office to find offenders near you.
