Inmate records in Utah are regarded as public records under the Utah Government Records Act. Inmate records usually include information about the inmate, such as their name, date of birth, physical description, criminal history, biographical information, charges, convictions, identification number, bail or bond amounts, length of sentence, release dates, and probation or parole histories.

Any interested individuals may access these records from governmental organizations and independent websites that provide access to UT public records per state regulations. However, this does not apply to juvenile and sealed records, as to access these records, you need to have a court order.

Utah has around 7,000 inmates in the state prison system operated by the UT Department of Corrections. It also has approximately 7500 inmates distributed across the 27 county jails in the state. The state also runs community supervision release programs with around 4,073 parolees and 11,853 probationers.

How to Locate a Prisoner in Utah

The Utah Department of Corrections has an offender search system for state prisons that gives data on every prisoner housed there. You can utilize the database in two ways: search by prisoner's first and last name with a middle name option or enter the inmate's DOC number.

You can also access the database using the advanced search option, where you indicate the physical description of the inmate, such as their height, age approximation, race, eye and hair color, and tattoos or visible scars.

You can also find an inmate incarcerated in the county jails by visiting your local county jail or sheriff's office. Most county jails in UT maintain a readily available inmate roster with the details of the inmates in their care. The roster is arranged in the offenders' names by default. However, you can search the list by gender, date of incarceration, or arrest in case the local sheriff's department arrested the inmate.

Since, at times, there are inmates in jail. Still, their information is not yet recorded on the jail's records. In that case, you can contact your local county sheriff's department or jail administration to manually check whether the inmate may be in the facility.

Some charge costly for services rendered where they are supposed to be free. Furthermore, they are not affiliated with any government agency and are entirely private. Thus, be cautious when utilizing them.

You can also utilize the UT Sex Offender and Kidnap Registry of the UT DOC if your person of interest is a sex offender. You can access this register locally from your local county sheriff's office or the DOC website.
